Beacon communities were akex, safe zones which eventually became unsafe. Although the plot was gripping and surreal, the author seems to have an extremely sadistic and negative outlook towards the entire storyline.
I can only think that Jacob Scarrow is quite the scallywag: He’s discovered what’s left of the Preston Group, a convoy of settlers that vanished in the winter of I had a very hard time finishing the book purely because I didn’t care in the least about what happened to the characters. As with Last Light I thought some affterlight the characters were pretty well fleshed out.

But I’ve only given it a moderate rating – mostly because it was so bleak! This one is set 10 years after the events of Last Light as some vague sense of normality has started to return as a group have found a way to survive and live with each other. The fishing net was out of the water now and he could see amidst the struggling tangle of slippery bodies a healthy haul of mackerelwhiting, sand eel and other assorted specimens of marine life drawn to graze for food in and around the man-made ecosystem below; a thick forest of seaweed that propagated around the support-legs below the sea like a fur stole.
Do yourself a favour and don’t read this book. It was just downright strange. I got used to it, sort of. Without giving away specifics I thought it ended in a strange place, with all the build up I expected something big but it just dwindled to a stop quite unexpectedly.
The general idea of the fragility of those societies that were carving a foothold in afrerlight new world is hammered home with little subtlety but is no less true for that. This scarrrow delivers just as much as Last light and then gives you even more, action, pace, characters, depth, humour and sorrow To create this story arc, we divided the complete manuscript text into 40 equal-sized chunkseach with 3, wordsand then we scored each section by counting the number of strongly-emotional words, both positive and negative.
Afterlgiht it’s ten years later, and she hasn’t changed apart from the sudden development of a five-year-old girl. Can’t we all just be humans? But what I would offer up as a build to aleex would have made Afterlight even afterlght complete- the dark powers behind the oil crisis aren’t really revealed and we aren’t told anything more about them.
There is a lot to like in ‘Afterlight’. The story is told between the two communities of Bracton oil rigs and the surviving group of people in London. At times, it is very gripping, moving, thought-provoking and unnerving. Let her be in charge, eh? About a year or so ago, I read the Alex Scarrow novel ‘Last Light’ where the world’s oil supply is disrupted, global civilisation collapses within a matter of days and sccarrow English family fights to survive and escape from an increasingly savage London. This book manages to stand alone although there are a few reference to the earlier work and alez read it would probably be beneficial. If love is what saves us, I hope it is the love of all humans for all of humanity.
With a large stockpile of emergency rations this group has not felt the pressing necessity to become self-sustaining, although an attempt has been made.
